Тем не менее, фильм необычен тем, что принимает форму кошмара, который для главного героя постепенно превращается в реальность. Этот пламенный гимн во славу пехоты, «царицы полей», как и всегда у Фуллера, включает в себя немало сцен, запоминающихся эффективностью и оригинальностью: например, та, где Джин Эванз думает, что массирует отмороженную ногу солдата, пока не поннмает, что это его собственная нога. От начала и до конца фильма Фуллер старается показать, что в бесчеловечных условиях войны человек может остаться в полном смысле слова человеком, лишь когда яростно преодолеет свои фобии, шагнет за границы возможностей.
